Family Tree Calligraphy

Two Styles of Handwritten Family Tree

Every family is different. Some people want a complete record of their family’s history, while others are looking for a charming, decorative keepsake to go on the wall.

I offer two distinct family tree options, both created with the same meticulous care and attention to detail.

A handwritten family tree transforms research, memories and relationships into something you can see, hold and share - a meaningful piece of artwork that celebrates where you come from.

I create bespoke family trees in calligraphy for clients across the UK and worldwide, ranging from detailed traditional ancestries to simpler, more informal trees designed as thoughtful gifts. Every family tree I write is carefully designed by hand, ensuring your family story is presented as a beautiful piece of artwork to be treasured.

Family tree calligraphy is popular as a special gift for milestone birthdays and anniversaries or as a lasting record for future generations.

Traditional Handwritten Family Trees (Fully Bespoke)

These are detailed, diagram-style family trees showing relationships across generations, perfect for anyone who has researched their genealogy and is looking for a formal record of their ancestry.

Each tree is designed to accommodate your specific family structure, with full names, dates and locations carefully lettered by hand. Lines and layout clearly show how individuals are connected, creating a piece of family art which is both informative and visually appealing.

Hand-Illustrated Details

My traditional family trees are illustrated by hand with a swirling leaf pattern. I can incorporate extra little details (for example, a favourite seasonal flower) on request. The result is a refined, elegant artwork that feels personal without detracting from the names and information on your tree.

Best suited for

  • Researched family trees

  • Heirloom display pieces

  • Milestone anniversaries or family celebrations

  • Representing the structure of your family

Because every family tree I write is designed from scratch, pricing and timescales depend on the number of names in your family tree, and the additional information you’d like me to include.

Simple Personalised Family Trees (A Quicker, Affordable Option)

If you're looking for a lighter, less formal style of family tree, these simple designs are really popular. The tree illustrations are pre-printed, and I add handwritten calligraphy names with my dip pens and specialist inks.

I offer a range of colourful family trees which include up to 25 first names only, without diagrams, dates or detailed genealogical information. The emphasis is on warmth and charm rather than formality and tradition, making these ideal as accessible gifts.

Why choose this option:

  • More affordable than a fully bespoke family tree

  • Despatch within days, not weeks

  • Clear, uncluttered aesthetic

  • Perfect for modern families

  • A thoughtful gift that doesn’t require months of research!

Because the tree illustration is already printed, the focus is on beautiful lettering which makes this a really personal gift, and super easy to organise too!

How to order your family tree

Whichever style you choose, I will make the process straightforward for you. I’ve been writing family trees for over a decade, and have proof and approval systems in place to reassure you at every step along the way.

For traditional family tree diagrams

  1. Get in touch - Contact me by email, letting me know how many names and generations are in your family tree, and how soon you need it. Include your family tree information as a PDF file, or a photograph of your handwritten notes.

  2. Info and quote - We’ll have a conversation over email. I’ll share thoughts on design, timings and the approximate size of your family tree. I will provide a quote at this stage.

  3. Payment and proofs - If you’re happy with the quote I will request payment and begin work on your family tree layout. This is done on the computer for legibility. I will send as many versions as needed, for you to check every spelling, date and detail before I begin the calligraphy work.

  4. Hand calligraphy - After your final proof is approved, I will write your family tree in calligraphy, adding illustration and gold leaf detail as required.

  5. Despatch and delivery - Your family tree will be securely packaged and posted to you with a tracked delivery service.

For simple, illustrated family tree gifts

My illustrated family trees are available on popular online gift stores Not On The High St and Etsy. Wherever you choose to order, you’ll find an easy online form where you can add names in preset positions. This makes ordering stress-free - and I offer a digital proof so you can fine tune your family tree layout before I put my calligraphy pen to paper.

A Lasting Celebration of Your Family

A handwritten family tree is timeless and tangible: a treasured artwork to display and pass down through generations. It celebrates names and dates, bringing layers of your family to life and showing connections between those loved and lost, preserving your family history in a deeply personal and truly special way.
